A CAREGIVER'S GUIDE TO WHAT MATTERS

Saying Goodbye

Musician Phil Dutton wrote these words as he sat by his dying mother’s bedside, knowing he had to fly back home.

I sit here by her beside,

the woman who gave me life,

likely for the last time.

Do I awaken her

to say "I love you" one last time?

I know she knows.

And I know she loves me.

She said so just this afternoon.

Few other words are decipherable,

but those are.

One moment soon I must get up

from this chair, touch her,

whisper those three words

and walk away,

leaving her here to finish her life.

But not just yet.
